Active Playground Support
For many children, especially children with special needs, unstructured recess time can be one of the most challenging parts of their school day. Yet many of our schools have few resources to help children succeed during this time. That’s why IPSF has partnered with the Special Education Community Advisory Committee (SE CAC) to develop a pilot program called “Active Playground Support” that benefits students by supporting social skills development and facilitating cooperative play and physical activity during unstructured playground times.
Our first year of the pilot program last year was very successful! We created a strong foundation at University Park and Greentree Elementary Schools. Our evaluation shows that the majority of children who have access to this program are more active and involved during unstructured playground times. In the coming year, we would like to refine the program and add another pilot school.
Thus far, the program has been supported by donations from parents, the community and hundreds of hours from an incredible team of volunteers.
